Status Effects are the different inflictions that enemies, foes, or traps can have on your character and party members in Fear & Hunger. They represent the core dangers in the game, as they can render the player unable to fight or cause permanent problems. These effects are partially listed in Anathomia.

This article, so far, is a stub and needs to be expanded with all the possible effects, preferably in a table listing all the effect names, results, what causes these effects (generally), what exact enemies or traps can cause them and ways of fixing them.

Icon160 Bleeding wounds: Caused by being hit by an arrow (trap, crossbow guard...) or getting a limb cut. The player under the effect will lose blood (leaving a small smear of it wherever they walk) and small amounts of health every few seconds. Fixed by using the Cloth fragment. Can be completely negated with Ring of the Still Blood or Salmonsnake Soul.
Icon129 Blindness or other eye trauma: Caused by having the character's eyes damaged or removed, mainly with the attack Flock of Crows. The effect makes your screen turn black while not in battle, making it almost impossible to play while under it. Some items prevent this effect from being caused. Full effects unknown.
Icon162 Fracture or broken bone: Caused by enemies that inflict heavy damage or wield mace-like weapons. Reduces maximum HP. The only ways to fix this effect are those that also cure limb loss, such as the Marriage of Flesh or a favor from The Lady of the Moon.
Icon164 Confusion or concussion: Caused by spellcasting enemies, such as the Yellow Mage. Stuns your character for the entire turn. Some items can prevent this, such as the Plate Helmet. It is one of the less harmful effects and as such, there is no way to fix it other than waiting.

Infected wound on arm/leg: Caused by scratches/cuts from dirty or diseased enemies. Can instantly kill your character if not treated in time. Treatable with Green herbs or with sawing your arm/leg using the Bonesaw.
Icon161 Poisoned: Causes health loss over time. Stronger than bleeding. Treatable with the White vial, "Mix of red and green" or equipping Thorned Ring.
Icon138 Strong toxic poisoning: Causes health loss over time. Twice stronger than regular poisoning. Treatable with the White vial or "Mix of red and green".
Icon154 Parasitic intestine worms: Caused mainly by attacks from the Maneba. Causes the inflicted character to "feel movement under their skin" and will get the character hungry much (~nearly twice) faster. It is one of the first effects the player can be damaged by in the game, and as such, it is one of the less harmful ones. Treatable with Worm Juice.
Icon153 Momentary stun: Cannot perform any actions while it lasts.
Icon112 Temporary paralysis: Paralyses your character until the battle ends. (???)
Icon165 Severe physical trauma: Caused by certain boss enemies such as the Crow Mauler or Skin Granny. Prevents the use of healing effects. If the character is healed, it will instead reduce their HP down to 1. Cured when combat is over.
Icon163 Severe anal bleeding: Caused by being raped. The player will constantly lose blood every few seconds, causing the character to pause in place at random intervals. Cloth fragments do not cure this form of bleeding, leaving only extreme treatments such as the Marriage of Flesh and the Lady of the Moon. Interestingly, if you encounter another guard and get sent into the Blood Pit upon losing the battle, the debuff clears off.

Hunger (I-V): Caused by having the character's Hunger raise above a certain level. If untreated, the severeness stage will slowly raise up to 5. Will weaken the character - stage I decreases Max HP to 90, II to 80, III to 70 and IV to 50; stage IV will also disable the character's legs. The effects will last for a while even after you feed the character if their Hunger was already too high. This will eventually lead to death if the character doesn't eat by stage V.

Icon135

Fear (I-V): Caused by facing enemies and objects that match the character's phobia (all phobias listed in the Book of Fears). It causes reduced damage output and increased damage intake. Overwatching talisman can negate any phobia while equipped.
Icon123 Brain Flower affliction: An affliction and status effect that can be acquired from facing the Brain Flower afflicted enemies found in the Level 7 catacombs, the Thicket, and in areas in derelict and present day Ma'habre. Can be cured if one drinks Worm Juice from their inventory.
Icon172 Bloodlust: Your player becomes enraged after using a spell in battle. Attack increased. Autobattle is on. Long. Ends upon receiving damage.
Icon137 Burning: caused by attacks from Dark Priests and Francóis's golden form, etc.. Causes health loss in battle. Can be cured with Water. Passes after the end of the battle.
Icon157 Defence debuff: Reduces the character's defense for four turns.
Icon170 Defence stance: A special combat stance to prevent severe physical trauma. Character's arms and legs cannot be severed for 3 turns.
? Silence: The character can't use Skills in battle.
Icon144 Happy: When you meet Pocketcat the second time in Cave dwellers village, tell him that you're feeling happiness. Effects unknown.
Icon146 Depressed: When you meet Pocketcat the second time in Cave dwellers village, tell him that you're not feeling happiness. Effects unknown.

Termina[]

  • Withdrawal: Exclusive to Fear & Hunger: Termina. Going into withdrawal from items such as Heroin will cause your character's attack, defense, and evasiveness to lower massively progressing from two different stages. Temporarily cured when using the item your character is suffering withdrawal from.
